Karst islands from the rail. Lunch at anchor.
Sheltered water, so the boat stays flat and nobody goes green. The question is only ever how long you stay aboard: an hour around a working harbour, a full day with a swim stop and a meal, or a cabin and the bay to yourself at six in the morning.
Four bays worth crossing the world for, and the boat to see each from.
Limestone in Vietnam, sea caves in the Andaman, a working harbour in the North Sea. What each costs and what the people aboard say about it.

Vietnam runs the most crowded and the most beautiful bay water on earth.
Two thousand limestone islands, one shipping lane of tour boats, and a real gap between the day fleet out of Hanoi and the overnight boats that push east into Lan Ha. Four ways to do it, and what each costs before you add drinks.

90-Minute Evening Lights Harbor Cruise
Join Maritime Circle Line at Landungsbrücken for a 90-minute evening ride on a traditional barge. The German-speaking captain shares harbor stories as you pass Speicherstadt, the Elbphilharmonie, container ships, and glowing terminals. Every good bay hides a cave you can only reach at low water.
Grottoes with a ceiling you duck under, hongs open to the sky in the middle of an island, a Blue Cave that turns the water electric for two hours a day. The big boat parks outside; you go in by canoe, tender or swimming.
What a day on a bay actually costs.
Every cruise on the site, grouped by the per-head fare. The gap between an hour on a harbour boat and a night in a balcony cabin is the whole price range of this site.
The bay does its best work in the last hour of the day.
Flat water, the wind dropping, the karsts or the cranes going from grey to gold. Evening sailings cost less than the day boats, take two hours, and in most ports leave from the same pontoon.
Every sunset and evening cruise →Three things a bay gives you that a coast road never will.
Sheltered water changes what is possible: you can sleep on it, paddle into the rock, and watch it light up after dark.

A night at anchor
The boats that stay out overnight drop anchor around five, once the day fleet has turned for the mainland. What follows is the part nobody photographs: dinner as the light goes, squid fishing off the stern with a lamp over the water, and a bay so quiet you hear the anchor chain shift. Cabins are the constraint, not seats - a boat carrying forty passengers may only have four with a balcony.

Into the rock at sea level
Limestone dissolves from underneath, so a bay full of karst towers is also a bay full of tunnels. Some are tall enough for a longtail; most take a canoe with the paddler flat on their back for the last few metres. Tide decides everything. The same hong that swallows a boat at nine in the morning is a wall of rock by two, which is why cave itineraries look strange until you see the tide table behind them.

The hour you are not on a boat
Every good bay cruise puts you in a kayak at some point, because the interesting water is a metre deep and full of rock. It is also the only hour of the day you get away from the engine noise. In a handful of bays - Fajardo in Puerto Rico among them - the paddle happens after dark, when disturbed plankton lights the blade green with every stroke.

From an hour off a cruise-ship dock to three days in the karst.
Bay cruises scale in a way almost nothing else does. Pick the block of time you can spare and the boat exists.
Typhoons, sea fog and the days the harbourmaster says no.
Sheltered water is not all-weather water. Ha Long suspends sailings in typhoon season, roughly June to October, and the fog months from February to April can grey the karsts out completely. The Andaman flips the other way: the southwest monsoon shuts the Phang Nga speedboats from May to October while the Gulf side keeps sailing. Refunds are usually automatic; a lost afternoon is not. These bays run all year.
Four bookings the bay will not hold open for you.
Most of this can be sorted the night before from a hotel lobby. These four run on cabin counts, tide tables and a moon calendar, none of which care when your flight lands.
- 01Featured: All-Inclusive OVERNIGHT Halong Cruises – many optionsA boat that sleeps thirty has thirty beds, and the balcony cabins on it go first. Autumn weekends in Ha Long book out weeks ahead.
- 02Phang Nga Bay Bioluminescent Plankton and Sea CanoesGlowing water needs a dark sky, so trips run around the new moon and stop near the full one. The calendar picks your date, not you.
- 03Phang Nga Bay Sea Cave Canoeing & James Bond Island by Big BoatThe big boats out of Phuket and Khao Lak leave once, early, and the canoe teams inside the bay work to a tide window. Miss the morning and the day is gone.
- 04Daytime or Sunset Historic Harbor CruiseOne sailing a day, and it moves with the season. In high summer the good boats are full a week out.
